Deforestation is still a problem, help us protect the rain forest !

According to data released by Brazil’s space research agency INPE, 10,129 square kilometers of the rainforest were cleared between August 2018 and July 2019. The Brazilian government also reported that the size of deforested land this year is 34% more than that of the same timeframe from the prior year. The Royal Statistical Society recently published that the Amazon lost 24,000 square miles of rainforest, which is equivalent to 8.4 million soccer fields. These statistics show that the issue of deforestation is real and serious, and we need to act now.

Eighty percent of the world's land-based species live in forests and deforestation is driving them extinct.

If the deforestation trend continues, some estimates indicate that over half of the remaining rainforest could be gone in the next seventeen years.

Global air quality has been degrading with more and more forest gone.

Deforestation will also cause catastrophic events like rising sea level.

Between 1900 and 2016, the sea level rose by 16–21 cm. As oceans are warmer and sea levels are rising at an accelerating rate, coastal cities are threatened by tsunamis or simply completely submerged. Low-lying countries are at the highest risk. At current rates, Maldives will be uninhabitable by 2100.

So what could you do to prevent deforestation?

Well, you could start by eating less beef. Believe it or not, every rib-eye steak on your dinner table caused one tree to be cut down. Cattle ranching is the largest driver of deforestation, accounting for 80% of the destruction in the Amazon Forest. Switch to more eco-friendly food like chicken and plant-based meat. Make it a habit, and tell all your friends.
