The ocean is a large saltwater body that covers around 71% of the Earth's surface. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, only 5% of the ocean has been studied, potentially leaving thousands, if not millions, of species unexplored. Protecting the ocean necessitates the preservation of all of the Earth's ecosystems. Beaches, lakes, jungles, and wetlands all benefit from the health of the ocean. Ocean currents also transport heat around the globe, influencing temperature and weather. Furthermore, the ocean absorbs more than 90% of the heat produced by human activities and nearly 30% of the carbon dioxide emissions.

Due to the pandemic, an increased amount of masks have been used. Many people are not responsible when it comes to disposing of their masks. Masks are left on grounds, which are then carried by the wind, or washed down by the rainwater. They will all eventually end up in the ocean. Incorrect disposal of face masks will be a safety hazard, as they can spread infections, and will also add on to the pre-existing plastics in the ocean.

How can you help reduce face mask pollution?

The easiest way to reduce pollution is to not litter, or do it properly. Garbage that is not treated releases toxic substances that take a long period of time to degrade into the soil and the ocean. These harms will eventually come back to us as they affect drinking water, animals, and livestock. Another feasible strategy is garbage sorting. By recycling water bottles and seal facemasks in a bag before disposal, pollution could be reduced remarkably. The last recommendation is to use cotton masks, degradable plastic, and recyclable products. As these environment-friendly products are more common nowadays, they shall be brought into the sight of the public.
